Nadia and Carol

Nadia Comaneci (Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej currently Onesti) Romanian Gymnast born 12 November 1961. She was the first Romanian to receive a score of 10 in the Olympic event. Comaneci was spotted by Bela Karolyi who was later her Romanian gymnastics instructor when she was only six years old. Comaneci participated for the first time at the national junior championships and finished 13th. The following year she became champion. In her first international competition in 1972 at a pre-Olympic Junior competition for communist-bloc nations she was awarded three gold medals and in 1973 and 1974 she became an all-around junior champion. At her first competition as a senior, in 1975 she beat the Russian Lyudmila Turishcheva the five-time European champion, winning four gold medals as well as one silver. She took home the American Cup in New York City in 1976 and became the first woman in history to complete a reverse double salto, which is dismounting from the uneven bars parallel to each other.
